How to convert military time

Military time numbers the hours of the day from 00 to 23 and writes a time as four digits, with no colon and no AM or PM. Find the hour below; the minutes never change.

Military time to standard time

  • Hour 13 to 23? Subtract 12 and add PM. 1730 → 17 − 12 = 5 → 5:30 PM
  • Hour 01 to 11? Drop any leading zero and add AM. 0930 → 9:30 AM
  • Hour 12? Keep it and add PM. 1245 → 12:45 PM
  • Hour 00? It is the 12 AM hour. 0015 → 12:15 AM
  • 2400? Midnight at the end of a day. 2400 → 12:00 AM, the next day's 0000

Standard time to military time

  • 1 PM to 11:59 PM? Add 12 to the hour. 5:30 PM → 5 + 12 = 17 → 1730
  • 1 AM to 11:59 AM? Write the hour with two digits. 9:30 AM → 0930
  • 12 PM? It stays 12. 12:45 PM → 1245
  • 12 AM? The hour becomes 00. 12:15 AM → 0015

Then leave out the colon and the AM or PM.

How to say military time

  • 0700“zero seven hundred”7:00 AM
  • 0730“zero seven thirty”7:30 AM
  • 1200“twelve hundred”12:00 PM

Questions people ask

Is midnight 0000 or 2400?

Both name midnight: 2400 at the end of Monday is the same moment as 0000 at the start of Tuesday. NIST, the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology, suggests 0000 for the start of a day and 2400 for its end. Military manuals differ: the Army's correspondence rules write 0001 to 2400, the Navy's correspondence manual has written 0000 to 2359 since 2015, and Allied message rules avoid 2400 where they can. More on midnight.

Is 1200 noon or midnight?

1200 is noon, 12:00 PM. Midnight is 0000 (or 2400).

Why is there no colon in military time?

Military time is the 24-hour clock written as four digits: the Navy's and the Air Force's writing rules leave the colon out, so it is 0930, not 09:30.

Do you say “hours” after military time?

Often, when speaking: “seventeen thirty hours”. In writing, the Army and the Air Force say to leave “hours” out.

Is it “zero” or “oh”?

The manuals say “zero”: 0700 is “zero seven hundred”, and the Navy's training manual gives 0100 as “zero one hundred”. In everyday speech you may also hear “oh seven hundred”.

What does the Z in 1730Z mean?

Z stands for Zulu, the military name for Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). 1730Z is 5:30 PM in UTC, which is 1:30 PM in New York in summer (EDT) and 12:30 PM in winter (EST).
